Statement on 19 October Presidential Elections in the Maldives

The Australian Government acknowledges the commitment by the Government of the Maldives to hold a fresh first round of Presidential elections in the Maldives on 19 October 2013. It is important that the elections are held in a free, fair and inclusive manner and facilitate a peaceful transition to a new President by 11 November, as required under the Constitution of Maldives.

We encourage Maldives voters to take part in the rescheduled process and note preparations being undertaken by the Elections Commission to facilitate voter participation.

As a fellow member of the Commonwealth we look to all parties in the Maldives to uphold democratic values and the rule of law by ensuring an orderly and peaceful electoral process. We call on all parties to accept the outcome of a free and fair contest.

Alongside other Commonwealth member states and other concerned parties in the international community, we continue to watch developments in the Maldives very closely.
