Australian High Commission Presents Message Stick: Indigenous Identity in Urban Australia in Colombo

The Australian High Commission presents Message Stick: Indigenous Identity in Urban Australia at the JDA Perera Gallery in Colombo, from 22 March to 7 April.

Message Stick features significant works by artists at the forefront of contemporary arts in Australia. The exhibition has been touring the world, supported by the Australian Government, and is in Sri Lanka for a limited time only.

Australian High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms Robyn Mudie, said, ‘Sri Lanka will have an opportunity to experience the best of Australian contemporary art with Message Stick.’

High Commissioner Mudie continued ‘Message Stick demonstrates our commitment to celebrating Australian Indigenous culture. We hope the exhibition will strengthen Sri Lankans’ understanding of Australian Indigenous experiences and the different voices that define what it is to be an Australian’.

Sri Lanka’s Minister of External Affairs, Hon Professor G. L. Peiris, said that the exhibition was a clear demonstration of the growing links between Australia and Sri Lanka across many fields.

“Like Sri Lanka, Australia has a rich and diverse culture. It is my hope that this exhibition will further strengthen cultural links between our two countries. I appreciate the Australian government’s efforts to provide Sri Lankan audiences an opportunity to view this unique art form”, Minister Peiris said.

The artworks in Message Stick offer humour, energy and, importantly, optimism, and reflect the enormous contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities to modern Australian society.

Entrance is free of charge. Contact the Australian High Commission on 0714 534505 for further information.
