Australian support for rural development in conflict affected areas
The Australian High Commissioner, Dr Greg French presented funds worth approximately Rs 3 million to four local organisations under the Australian Government’s Direct Aid program (DAP) in a ceremony on 29 May.
Speaking at the occasion Dr French emphasised that “The High Commission takes great pride in the Direct Aid Program which allows us the opportunity to work with organisations such as the four gathered today, each of which is working in their communities, in different parts of the country to assist disadvantaged people”
DAP projects have benefited female headed households, children, the disabled, the elderly and the rural poor, among others.
In this funding round, Dr French presented funds to Mannar Association for relief and rehabilitation for the construction of 25 toilets in four villages; The Organisation for Rehabilitation of the handicapped in providing income generation opportunities for 21 disabled people in the Vavuniya district; The Centre for Women and Development in Jaffna to provide livelihood opportunities in the district and the Sabaragamuwa Community Development centre to support the construction of 18 toilets and complete a further 14 half built toilets.
