Increasing awareness of drowning prevention and water safety

The Life Saving Association of Victoria, Australia, together with the Life Saving Association of Sri Lanka has initiated a campaign to raise awareness of water safety to prevent drowning. The initiative is supported by the World Health Organization.

In Sri Lanka more than 1,200 people drown in each year. With the help from Australian lifesavers and drowning prevention specialists, there is a goal to halve this number by 2017.

Australian High Commissioner HE Robyn Mudie was the Chief Guest at a 1 October event held at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla, by the Life Saving Association of Sri Lanka to introduce the inaugural Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Report for Sri Lanka, to be launched later this year.
